“Escapes and Lies”

By Antonio Ortuño

Escapee: A person who is distrustful or hides in fear of something or someone.

Lie: An assertion that is the converse of what is known, thought, or believed.

Continuing with my line of work, which explores sensations and feelings, it is now the turn of escapes. This is a topic that has a lot to do with feelings that make us deviate from the norm. These feelings can lead us to act in such a way that we may want to become invisible or run away from everything out of spite, for love, for fear, due to a lack of understanding, because of our ideology or our sexuality, or maybe because we are depressed, embarrassed or shy. All of these circumstances (which sometimes are external and, sometimes, personal) cause us to hide and not truthfully express ourselves, or lead us to lie and make up excuses for not being there for others. They can even make us deny ourselves certain things, but also arouse feelings of self-confidence which in turn can help us avoid conflicts that compel us to face unnecessary struggles.

Escapees leave their mark, their questions, their answers, and a feeling of discomfort if there is sadness underneath it all. On the contrary, we can become more self-confident, meaning that we can attain anything and everything without looking back or having anyone interfere with our lives.
