STEP BY STEP TO ARTIST RESIDENCIES

Workshop Description: Artist residencies are opportunities for artists, researchers, curators and creative people to experiment in a time and space outside of their usual environment. It is a time and space to reflect, investigate, exhibit and / or produce in a different context, meeting new people and working with new materials while immerse in another national, international, urban or rural culture. In this workshop you will learn all you need to know about artist residencies: the different kinds of residencies that are out there; the resources where you can find about residency programs and calls for submission; tips on how to choose the best residency, how to apply and where to look for funding assistance. The instructor will go over a sample residency application with the group and participants are welcome to bring past, current or potential applications to work on and receive feedback at the workshop.

Instructor Bio: Kadija de Paula is a relational artist and arts administrator with over ten years of experience working with arts organizations in Canada and abroad. She holds an I.M.B.A from the Schulich School of Business at York University and a B.F.A. from OCAD University. Kadija is a specialist in the field of artist residencies. From 2011 to 2012 she was the Coordinator and Facilitator of residencias_en_red [iberomaerica], a collaborative platform among 27 artist residency programs in 12 Latin American countries and in Spain. In 2012 she led a pilot research project for Res Artis, an international artist residency network, with the mapping of over 50 residency programs in Latin America. She has participated in more then ten residency programs internationally and has presented her work in numerous seminars and public forums in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Netherlands and Japan. Kadija is currently the Production Coordinator of Terra UNA’s residency program in Brazil. She also provides business consulting and project management services to artists and arts organizations internationally, through the Project Lab of Lastro: free exchanges in art. She’s part of the artist collective Agência Transitiva in Rio de Janeiro and a practicing street artist and fanzine maker. As a relational artist, Kadija is interested in building collaborative communities that are catalysts for social innovation and change.
