Velvet & Silk
by Miguel Trelles & Amy Westpfahl
April 21st – May 5th
Opening Reception April 21st 6pm-10pm
Local Project, Long Island City, NY

Velvet & Silk addresses the intersection of art, politics, and history as well as the interface of indigenous and popular culture in North American society today.

Amy Westpfahl’s work addresses recent/contemporary events while Miguel Trelles reinterprets classic and post-classic Mesoamerican icons.

In Westpfahl’s drawings, the velvet rope acts as a symbol for the exclusionary avatars of social class structures in the United States.

Through various silkscreens, Trelles stresses the endurance of Mesoamerican iconography, highlighting its ritual “sacrifice” content as eminently pertinent today. This telescoping of the ancient into the contemporary sphere is further achieved by projecting/framing the Mesoamerican unto/within popular rock music emblems.
