Reverse Apotheosis: End of The World

Reverse Apotheosis: End of The World. There is a great deal of speculation around the arrival of 2012, and the supposed end of the Mayan Calendar. It has been postulated in several books that the world will end on December 12, 2012. The agents of destruction that have been predicted range from giant solar flares that will rock the planet and turn it upside down, to a red dwarf planet (“Planet X”) that will collide against earth. There is no scientific proof whatsoever to lend credence to these theories, but the idea of the annihilation of our planet in the year 2012 has nonetheless captured the popular imagination. The performance will take place outside of the legendary Five Pointz building in Long Island City NY, and will be a collaboration between Ulysses Castellanos,Gabriel Roldos and Fluid Media Lab from New York City, the noise band Zueiing and the performance art group Hijas del Mal from Cordoba, Argentina.

The Argentinean artists will perform via live streaming that will be projected onto the Five Pointz building.

The idea for the piece originated with two performances developed during a residency at La Cupula Media Lab in Argentina, in which Castellanos collaborated with Zueiing and Hijas del Mal in two performances entitled Funeral for VHS and Reverse Apotheosis PT1. For the New York City incarnation of the project, the performance will incorporate musical elements created by Gabriel Roldos and Zueiing, combined with performances by Hijas del Mal and Ulysses Castellanos, a sandbox projection by Fluid Media Lab, and a video constructed from footage of apocalyptic events taken from a variety of disaster films, as well as footage from the Heaven’s Gate cult, the Manson Family, John Berger’s Ways of Seeing and Argentinean singer Sandro, culminating in a meditative, calm and tranquil landscape, celebrating the continuation of life on earth.
